I have an '06 Kia Sedona minivan {sister company to Hyundai}. It's worth about $3k-$3,500, but I will keep it another 5-6 years at least. There is nothing wrong with the paint, BUT:
ItsRick24: You need to evaluate the value of the vehicle, and how long you will keep it.
You DO say it is mechanically sound, so IF you plan to keep it for many more years, then a $1500 paint job may not be so bad.
Shocks, struts, brakes and maybe tires will cost you that and at 8 years old {soon to be 9} I am sure you will have to have done/may have/have had done/will need done-2 out of those 3 or all three to the tune of about $1500....so would you ignore the shocks and struts just to save some money? Probably not, so you have to look at the paint as "routine maintenance " you'd do like the shocks/struts/brakes.
And $1500 over 60 months is only about $25/month in cost, and I think it'd be worth it to keep it nice looking.
Now, $2,500, for me, I'd have to
really consider it, as it is about the value of the vehicle, even at keeping it for 16 years...I might do just a Maaco quicky-job, to help it out lasting longer. I wouldn't get that out of it...IF I sold it...
Now, have you tried several body shops in your area? They may not all be so expensive. And a Maaco job might just be for you @ $500.
BTW it was recently backed into. I had it all fixed nicely for $600. That included repairing the rear quarter panel dent and repainting it. For that price, it was well worth it to keep it up.
Why? Simply BECAUSE I will keep it for another 5-6 years at least, and that is worth it to me.
Its ultimately up to you.
