Neighbor has a Honda Odessey--- two transmission replacements and counting.
Friend with a Civic tells me he "likes it" and goes on to say that it's had two cracked engine blocks and he had to pony up money for the second one.
I know perception is 9/10 of reality, but I wouldn't be real positive if ANY car I owned had these type of problems.

The Odysseys (forgot which model year) definitely had some major transmission issues due to a particular defective part. My memory is hazy but I think it was sourced from a third party, not that it is an excuse. I have a 2005 Odyssey that is still running strong, although mine is very low miles.
Narrowed down my next purchase to these 2. Probably the Accord Sport or the 2nd level trim Mazda 6.
My main concern is whether the Mazda will last as long as the Honda. I've had multiple Honda's and their reliability is unsurpassed. They just aren't very exciting. The Mazda is the most stylish looking of the midsized Sedans..most of their specs are very similar.
Anyone have experience with both? Anyone know anyone with a Mazda 6 over the long term?
The 6-speed manual V6 Accord Coupe is a beast for what it is. I would buy it in a heartbeat over a Mazda any day of the week, and I LOVE my CX-5 Mazda. The V6 Accord is just a crazy animal. Heck, it would stop an S2000, lol.
I'm not aware of any cars that still use a timing belt. Nonetheless, there are issues even with timing chains, reports of stretching, slop, and rattling.
Several cars still use timing belts. Toyota and Honda still use belts on their interference engines (primarily their V6's). Timing chains can give issues, especially if components such as the tensioner or guides are faulty and fail. Typically, though, timing chains last a very long time.
A v6 accord would be fun to drive with a 6-speed manual however:
When I was car hunting a year ago, I could only find a few Accords with manual transmissions and they were 4 cyl. models.
I couldn't find any Mazda 6's in manual trans in the area I live in.

Honda only sells the V6 manual in coupe body, and they are very, very low production. In the past you could get an LX-V6 manual coupe, but that is no longer the case as that trim doesn't exist.

I'm a working guy with a family so my main concern is not performance, it's reliability.
That being said, these 4 cylinders have horsepower up there with v8's I drove in the 80's, and the 6 cylinders blow those old 8 cylinders out of the water.
A Nissan Altima V6 has 270HP. Those 80's mustangs people thought were fast had around 225HP.
2014 Mazda 6: 34 complaints. No NHTSA investigations. Major patterns: steering wheel intermittently locks up during turning due to software failure (fixed by recall), cracking windshields
2014 Honda Accord: 126 complaints. 1 NHTSA investigation for frequent complaints of loss of power steering. Major areas of complaint: power steering; windows, trunk, and sunroof opening while car is parked.
Mazda 6s are built in Hiroshima, Japan, while Honda Accords are built in Ohio, USA. Consumer Reports also rated Mazda 6 more-reliable than Honda Accord right now.
