A new base model is not even $23k so it's doubtful, but entirely possible depending on the trim.

Having owned a 2yo CPO Outback and a 4yo CPO C70, in addition to one other subaru and three other volvos, I know of what I speak. The CPO warranty on the subaru adds virtually nothing, but does extend the powertrain warranty from 5/70(?) to 7/100 and gives roadside assistance. This seemed of no consequence to me originally since my previous Subaru was bulletproof and then my 2011 Outback needed a head gasket at 30k miles. It barely fell within the five years but I would have still been covered had it not, additionally for $75 Subaru will transfer this warranty to the next guy you sell too.

Volvo CPO warranty is a whole other animal. It basically covers everything (7/100k) powertrain, steering, suspension, brakes, electrical, a/c and comes with roadside. Dealers around here never CPO, we drove 200mi to get a CPO because that coupled with the dismal Volvo residuals made for a great deal. The downside is that all routine maintenance has to be done by Volvo, so no $30 oil changes. So if you don't live near a Volvo dealer its worthless.

Had I not had the head gasket experience I would still be saying Subarus are a great deal for a long term value. Mostly bulletproof. Modern Volvos are always problems, electrical and a/c stuff at 50k and bigger stuff by 80k. But- the Volvo is a MUCH better, more solid, better handling, tighter, tougher, luxurious car. My biggest reason I ditched my Outback was because my XC70 had spoiled me. I was a Subaru fangirl from way back but that Outback, while nice, could not compare to the refinement of my xc70 and wasn't fun or sporty like my WRX wagon. Why bother?

Going into 2016 I would not pay more than $21 for a Forester unless it was an XT, then maybe $22.5. But I personally would never bother with the XT trim line of the Forester, it was sooooo cheesy compared to the Outback V6 Limited and it was a 4speed! On a turbo!

Volvos look nice and have nice features. I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole... quality has gone in the dumpster for well over a decade now.

Subaru's have a well deserved reputation for quality. It's not even a contest, as I would not consider the Volvo at any price.

Shopping recently for a subaru I have no idea who is paying those high used prices on late model cars. You might as well buy new if you're only saving $3K on a used model. The subaru forums have good information on what to pay new and it's generally a bit under invoice.

People that are buying a used Subie that is cheaper by 3000 over a new model are people that are buying a car based on the amount of their monthly payment.

I had a Subie and the turbo went bad ... twice. Still loved the car.
