Pretty soon I'll need to start shopping for a car for my wife. All the cars she has used have had a feature where the lights turn on and off automatically. My Honda does not do this & it irritates her. She said she would like this feature for her car.
So what cars have this feature? I know most newer General Motors cars do because those are the cars she drove growing up.
Cadillac introduced automatic headlamps (called "Twilight Sentinel") for the 1964 model year.
My 1976 Cadillac Limousine and 1995 Lincoln Town Car both have this feature.
Most new Subaru, Honda, and Toyota cars turn the driving light on automatically. But your wife should know that while the driving lights (by the headlights) come on automatically when she starts the car, in most vehicles the tail lights do not. If you want all the lights on you still have to turn the light switch to the right position. Something else: most new automobiles can be programed at the dealership to have the lights work the way you want when you buy it.
I see a lot of people driving around thinking that because their driving headlights are on, the rest are on too. This can create a dangerous situation for the drivers following when dark or foggy.

On the flip side, what cars still allow you to leave your lights on with the ignition key out? I am amazed that some still do, my partner rented a GM car not too long ago and accidentally left the headlights on overnight and drained the battery. Can't do that in Subarus (what we own) and most other cars can you?
My 2010 Honda Insight doesn't have this feature. The 2005 focus ST I used to own didn't either. The Civic is another car I'm considering and it doesn't as well. I'm not sure about the 2007 Mazda 3, which is another car I'm considering. Autotrader and Cars.com do not indicate this feature when I compare cars, so it's hard to know.
Hondas. They do not. Confirmed by dealer. Bought 09 Ridgeline and was like - wdf, where is auto headlights? Ahh, Honda does not do it.
Otherwise, it's either an option, or pretty much most new makes have them. I've heard, in Ca, you can not buy a car without auto lights.

Some do, and some don't. My work van I have now turns all the lights on when I start it, but the previous van only turns the headlights on. This one I had to turn the light switch to control all the lights with the light sensor on the dash. Otherwise only the headlights would come on.
