I have a full set of Weathertech in my Prius, came with it when I got the car used. They're thick and fits pretty well.
Now I'm thinking about purchasing another set for my Subaru Outback. But the price for a full set not including the trunk liner is about $179 for front and back. There are generic floormats for only $30.
I've had generic floormats/cargo mats as well as Weathertech. The difference is like buying a "one size fits all" car cover, vs one that is specifically designed for your vehicle.
Sure, it gets the job done, but it's not as high of quality and the fitment leaves something to be desired.
We have Weathertech mats in our Cayenne, very sturdy, fits great. Also have them for our MDX, which we like better than the stock mat it came with. (The stock mat has ridges because you can fold it up for when you use the 3rd row, but annoying for when you are not using it.)
Depends on the car.... for a beater, no, I don't need weathertech. For my nicer rides, I would. $200 to protect the interior of 30k car doesn't seem that bad.
I bought Weathertechs for my Prius. It's my first set of Weathertechs, and I like 'em. I do a lot of getting in and out of my car, so I wanted something that would hold a lot of water when I track in snow. They do better than any generic floormat that I've ever had, and they cover the area pretty well. I also got one for the trunk floor.
Huh? $200 for floor mats? WHY?? So that it looks better and stays in place a bit better? So what? $20 set from Walmart lasts about 4 years, does the darn job, and can be easily secured in place to prevent sliding. First thing I do - go buy them to cover OEM floor mats that came with the car. Then remove them for sale, so OEM ones look like new.
TWO HUNDRED bucks for floor mats.... Crazy.
I am VERY disappointed with the company's customer service. We received our mats they had an issue with drivers mat not fitting flush on the area by accelerator petal. I contacted the company's customer service expecting them to offer to exchange the defective mat for a correct one. To my surprise they instead said that I should send back the whole set at my expense and be refunded the purchase price. After informing them I had no intention of paying the cost to return defective merchandise they begrudgingly agreed to send a prepaid shipping label. Made in America, but with a poor attitude.

Why would you leave the oem mats in the car if you bought cheap ones to put in there?
We have them in our jeep and like them, the fit is excellent
Husky Liners fit just as well as Weathertech, but offer better coverage near the door sill. I have Weathertech mats in one of my cars, Husky Liners in the other. I prefer the Husky Liners. They're not quite as thick, but durability doesn't seem to suffer.
