If you need to have the rotors turned or need new rotors, yes it will be more expensive. Get some estimates, talk with friends, or you might try getting a ballpark figure on RepairPal ...
How much should brakes cost to fix?
Is it more if they are really bad?
Depends on what's wrong.
Typical rotors and pads at an independent shop? $200-500 per axle.
New a caliper replaced? Add $150-200 or so
Do it Yourself? $50-150 per axle
Your question is way to general for anyone on the internet to answer accurately. We don't even know what car this is? Honda civic brakes will be cheaper to replace than Mercedes CL55 brakes.

I recently paid $148 for rotors and pads on my 2007 Ranger. Many years go, I paid over $400 for the same on a 1996 4Runner. It depends on the vehicle, and the shop. I have seen some places advertise $99 per axle for just pads, but then if the rotors can't be turned or are warped, they will add $200 or more. Brakes are one item that you shouldn't put off if they are worn out.
Did a rear brake job on my car for 50 bucks a few months back. If you need new brakes DO NOT WAIT. Driving a car with bad brakes is flat out negligent.
Get your parts from Rock Auto and do it yourself. It's real easy, especially if you know nothing about how to do it.
Not really.
A couple hundred dollars is likely about right for two for most cars, as mentioned it will depend on whether the pads are the only things that need replaced the rotors aren't compromised and the calipers are working properly. If either of those need replaced then the cost will rise. Some shops will always turn the rotors while others don't.
Labor at most shops, at least around here, runs $80 to $100/hour, dealers are up to $200/hour. Then the shop marks up the parts over what they (or you) would pay at the parts store.
As said, brakes, and tires, are two of the most important parts of your car. Don't dawdle if they need work or replaced.
Thanks for the replies.
What auto brake chain shop or auto repair chain shop do you think will be the most reasonable?
Would Sears be one of the more expensive?
I know car dealerships charge the most.
Thanks.

I would recommend an independent shop over a chain, the indy will do as good or better work, for less. The chains are notorious for trying to "up-sell" you all sorts of crap you don't need.
Post up in your state/city forum to ask about which indy shop has the best reputation.
