A problem has arisen on one of our cars this past weekend: the brake lights wouldn't turn off even after the car is off! We disconnected the battery to prevent fully discharging it. What could have caused this problem on our 1994 Honda Civic?
There is a little rubber plug on the brake pedal that depresses the brake light switch when the brake pedal is all the way back and that turns off the brake lights
The rubber plug has broken off, with the door open crouch down on your knees and with a light and you'll see.
I put a screw and 2 nuts to replace the plug and press the brakelight switch.
You can fix this temporarily by just using a similar sized nut/bolt if you have one handy. Heck, you could even just tape something up there as a temporary solution so the brake lights don't drain your battery. That little piece of plastic will run you about 4 bucks from Honda. They should have them in stock though since this is a common part to break.
