Yes, GPS on your phone will work just as well as your stand alone device. In many cases a lot better.
I still have a stand alone GPS in my car from 2008 or something and haven't pulled it out for the last 5 years.
Same here though my wife still finds the old TomTom to be "better" because "she's used to it"
Not only is the cell phone GPS essentially free, but with Google Maps you get traffic updates and "fastest route given traffic", something you don't always have with the old standalone GPS units (or have to pay a monthly fee to get).
I use Google Maps on the phone and prefer to analyze the route before I drive. I can't deal with being told to turn after I am no longer able to get in position to do so. Other than that, Google maps does a good job telling you in advance what exit and lane you need to be in. It's the quick movements that gets you. Having a handheld stand within eye level helps.
Avoid buying Chinese products. They lack in durability.
Use Here Maps on Android. Free offline maps and turn-by-turn directions.
Agreed, I keep a spare cheap Android phone or Windows with Here maps, just for a backup GPS purpose. If I get somewhere where google maps cant get to the web, Here maps saves the day.
I've gone ahead and ordered a refurbished 5" Garmin for $97 on Ebay. Problem solved.
I got a used Garmin with lifetime maps for $35.00 off ebay. Excellent condition.
I prefer the 1490 and below. As they state verbally "Recalculating" as I want to know right away that I have made a wrong turn. The newer ones don't have this feature.
The whole point of Waze is having up to date info .... without a data connection....it doesn't.
But you still get directions. And if you get spotty reception here and there it will update when it can. Not like no signal areas out in the boonies have a lot of traffic to route around anyway.
I've had Tom Tom (barf) and Magellan, and both were markedly inferior to the Garmins. I have two, a 5" and a 6". Now I want a seven. Eight would work if it's not outlandishly priced.

Are you looking for a built in dash unit at 7" or 8"?
