I love the sound of a Porsche flat 6, but I've never heard anything that sounds quite as hot as a Ferrari... except perhaps some old V8-V12 Jags before emissions choked off their sound.

M5 E60 with V10 sounds comparable to the Jag's V10-12. The new M5 with turboed V8 ain't the same anymore.
Just listen to this, pure "eargasm"!!!
I guess it's all what you are used to or brought up around,
This. different kinds of performance cars have much different sounds. If you're brought up around sports cars, the high revving small displacement engines sound good, as you recognize their performance from the sound. Same with guys growing up around hot rods and American muscle, or guys growing up around motorcycles of various flavors.
For me, it's a combination. Larger displacement sports car are my favorite, as they were what meant performance to me in the '60s and '70s growing up, with big American muscle coming in second.
So I like the bigger Porsche flat 6s and smaller V12s that scream nicely. And for motorcycles, it's the Ducati V-twin sound that has a bit of American musclecar tone to it.
Even though it's not a true engine noise, I love the exhaust note on the Fiat 500 Abarth. I laughed the first time I heard one start up. Too much fun. Wish my Fiesta ST sounded like that.
I grew up around Harleys & loved the sound & I still do but even they can be too loud at times. Love the sound of the Dodge Hellcat of course. The new 350GT sounds just perfect as well as the Chevy Z28!
I forgot to add Aston Martin they have handmade exhausts Their V-8 & V-12 are SO sweet!
late 80's EFI Ford 5.0L V8. Throw on some aftermarket mufflers and it's a sweet sound. Second place would be the 96-98 Ford 4.6L DOHC.
