But back to my first post.
Sounds like some good questions to ask your local dmv and police...

In other words, all this advice is pretty much worthless.
Which is why the OP needs to go to the police department that has control of the car and the tickets and get advice/information.

The collateral on the tow fine and storage costs is the car - which you sold. Let them collect against the collateral.

But going to the DMV and registering the sale is not a bad idea - even though you kinda' did it wrong.

(BTW - the buyer is probably not answering his phone because he's in lockup...)

Always, regardless of State, advise the DMV in writing of Vehicle Sale Transaction, immediately, preferably in person.

A little late for this but once a sale has been finalized . . . REMOVE the License Plates prior to allowing the buyer, ID or NO ID, to take delivery.

Also, NO ID indicates NO LICENSE TO DRIVE . . . did this not sound an alarm or two?

So you sold it with the plates still on it? You should have turned them in to the DMV.

Actually had similar thing happen to me. Young kid bought the car for 2 or 3 hundred. Was actually pretty good runnng car but had some major cosmetic issues. In any event I legally transferred title too him because I would not have done it any other way, typically the new owner is going to register the vehicle at this point but it's not required and he didn't.

He drove the thing away with no tags, no insurance... not my problem anymore because it legally belongs to him. About two weeks later I get a phone call from the towing company telling me I owe for the towing fees etc. Paperwork had not gone through yet and it was still coming back as owned by me apparently. You know how some of those tow guy can be pricks, with glee I told him the car was no longer mine but I had a set of keys I could sell him for $100. LOL

have you checked the jail in the county the guy lives in to see if he is in jail ? I remember once and I'm talking ages ago someone stole my car from where I worked and I filed a police report of the theft and some months later the insurance paid off on the car . 7 years later they are towing the bay where I used to live and what do they pull up but my old car , the police dept called me and asked me if I knew anything about the car and if I wanted the car back ..really 7 yrs in salt water and you want to know if I want the car back ? not hardly and I explained to the officer what happened and he started checking records and found out what I told him to be correct and he called to say he was sorry that he had bothered me .I think next time you had better go the safe route and just do it all at your local dmv place and never ever trust anyone when they say they don't have time or etc to go to the dmv , there is a reason for the excuse and most likely no . 1 is they are not legal drivers no license . license suspended , etc .
