that does not invalidate my observation.

I bought Rain X & it works great. I will use the wiper blades less during the rainy season which is approaching here soon.

OP, you may be able to just pull the cover off the box and even spraying some Tri-Flon or similar lube spray on the mechanism is probably better than nothing. I have seen just plain dirt be the main problem with these old GM wiper transmission boxes.

Likewise with the speedo cable - take it loose from the back of the speedo, and put the straw of the Tri-Flon can in the cable, give it a blast.

It would cost you some gas, but if you let the car warm up "old school", idling till the heater is putting out some heat, that might warm up the box enough to keep it from making noise - the noise is not the problem, it's a symptom of inadequate lubrication, and you are right that if you continue to ignore it, the box may fail. It might. That said I have never seen one of these actually seize up or break a part.

My cousin took the black box cover off but couldn't get to the gears in the back. I like the idea of rain x & the bottle I bought will last me through the short winters here. The speedometer is making very little noise now cause the weather is a bit warmer.

If you get the box off, you can spray Tri-Flon on the gears without taking things apart more than they already are.

For the speedo cable - you can take the speedometer end loose with just your hand, spray in a good lube, and things will probably be cool. Or you can wait till it breaks from being dry, go hunt down the part, maybe have to get a used one from a yard, and then take both ends loose, R&R.

Seems to me giving things a spray of good lube now would save you more trouble down the road.

Before you ask, no, WD-40 is not an acceptable substitute for Tri-Flon or Break-Free, some other sort of higher end Teflon based lube spray. WD-40 is primarily a water displacer, (that's what WD stands for) and corrosion inhibitor. It was invented to protect rocket engines from salt air corrosion right there in Cali. It's got some lubricating properties but not that good really.

I put Rain X on my windshield & I guess I didn't apply it correctly. Its not working like its suppose to. I will reapply later this week. The wiper blades are working fine & I am using the delay method. I still hear the noise because it is cold today & very rainy.

In late December (around the 20th) I paid a so called friend in advance for a good used complete wiper motor. It has been 2 months & he has yet to produce the item. He has put me off & off & now I don't trust him anymore. I will NEVER pay for a item in advance again. The wiper box still is noisy but it still works. What are the chances of the wiper box breaking down completely ? It hasn't rained here much this winter so I haven't had to use the wipers much.

Odds of a complete breakdown are probably low. Odds improve if you get some Tri-Flon as I advised awhile back and spray it on the gears.

I talked to my cousin who is a mechanic & he agrees with you. I plan to get Tri-Flon when i have the money. It has barely rained here in so.ca this winter so i haven't used the wiper blades much. Thanks for the info.

It looks like march will be a wet month & i sure hope the wiper box holds out. I will be using rain x which actually works good & repels the water. Ill just stay off the freeways on rainy days like this sunday.
