I bought my stepson a 1989 Escort (A/T) with only 80,000 miles (one owner car and I knew the owner personally) and the engine is very strong. Sadly, there's no overdrive. However, in order to help him with saving a bit of money in gas I wanted to install an after market cruise control (unless has their own for the car). Any thoughts? Are they all trash...?

I put an Audiovox cruise control on my jeep and it was great!

Blazer Prophet, I put an aftermarket cruise control on my '92 Ford F150. (Don't remember the brand; but I know they're out of business now...) Love it! Cruise, used wisely, is a great tool. I'd recommend your son (or anyone else) not use it on wet/snowy/icy roads!!!

Cruise control is good on flat roads, but in hilly terrain it will actually use more gas.

Because when you're using your foot you can build up speed going downhill, therefore reducing the strain on the engine going back uphill. You save gas that way by keeping the vehicle in overdrive. Cruise control will kick it down into third gear nearly everytime going up a long hill.

My other step son (twins) already has CC in his escort wagon. He had it set and was driving along when he came to a long downhill stretch, so he threw the car into nuetral. The CC didn't shut off and the car went to the edge of red line.

So you think you're saving energy by using it on the downside of the hill rather than the upside? Even if I bought this theory (which I don't), why can't you do the same thing even with the cruise control on?

Yes. Everyone knows that an engine uses less gas when the transmission stays in the highest gear and the engine is under the least amount of strain. And yes, you can do the same thing with the cruise turned on, but many people won't.
