Because many folks today who are either idiots, too impatient, or just ain't paying attention could easily drove off with the gas pump still attached.

There already people who left their babies in their car and forgotten them to go to work. Something careless could cause fires and multiple deaths.

I would think the only real mechanism for a fire might be a backfire from a car igniting fumes. It's very unlikely now, but back in the day much more common. Everything else is no different whether the car is running or not.

As far as cell phones, that's 100% bunk. If ther was a fire involving a phone, it's due to someone getting in and out of the car and not making sure they discharge static somewhere besides where the vapors are coming out of the tanks.

John. About age 19 at the time.
Many decades ago.
Young man with a Honda 100 motorcycle.
He would fill up the motorcycle tank while smoking a cigarette.

I think mainly now its because some idiot will somehow start a fire, and they will say there was no warning and sue the station.

More of a CYA sort of thing.

The actual zone where the gasoline vapor concentration is in the "sweet spot" is pretty small and concentrated right by the fill port area. Gas vapors ignite when the concentration is between 1.4% and 7.6%. Not a very wide range and pretty small.

That's why your electric fuel pump in your tank doesn't start a fire. Vapor concentration is near 100% which is too rich to burn.

Well there you go, that's good enough for me.

Also to those who don't believe there is "any" danger in using Cell Phones while pumping gas, how about if one drops and explodes ??

If it was really unsafe for a car engine to be running while pumping gas, you would be required to turn off your engine 30 feet or so from the pumps, push your car up to the pump, then push it 30 feet away from the pumps before restarting. How many times have you been pumping gas when a car on the other side of the same pump is coming or going?

What if? That's why I never drive my car without wearing my safety helmet and flame retardant suit. j/k

I don't know about "any" danger but I'm not gonna stress about astronomical risks when there are so many other things around us that carry much higher risk.

Leaving your car running while you are near the back of the car is a good way to get car jacked.
