I still convinced that the self-driving car has a long way to go, and when they are allowed the problems will end the experiment and send them back to the drawing board for many years. I expect there to be more and more advancements in the internal combustion engine and more hybrids. People still like power. I just bought a Challenger, 305 HP from a V6, getting 19-20 mpg around town, and real fun to drive. There have been predictions of the classic car and aftermarket industry dying with the baby boomers, yet I see plenty of young people at car shows, swap meets and on car forums.
The automotive aftermarket is a $318 Billion industry, collector car auctions account for $1 Billion a year, and there are many new cars available with 300-600 horsepower. There are even some with over 600, of those only one (Tesla Model S P85D – 691 hp) is electric. Besides power, I like to be able to drive 400 miles and spend a mere 5 minutes refueling to continue on my trip, the 1,000 mile + road trip is not yet possible on electric cars. The best so far are a pitiful 70-90 miles on a full charge unless you spring for a Tesla S, and even then 240-270 miles is far less than I can get on the Challenger at 27 MPG with 19.5 gallon tank, a range of over 500 miles.
The Porsche Mission E will have over 600hp and they say can be charged to 80% in just 15 minutes. Range at full capacity is estimated at 310 miles. Won't be out for another 4 years though. By then, I'm sure it'll have even more power and better range.
