Most dealers won't even offer the KBB trade in value, expect a grand under that.

I've always done better selling to carmax or even better, texas direct auto. They will beat carmax's offer. But that's here in houston. Dealers will always royally lowball you on a trade.

I buy my vehicles to fit the missionprofile. It's not about boredom. It's about utility. Will itdo what I need it to do. An Equinox is a pretty versatile vehicle. And it will get much better mileage than an F-150. And if your Equinox is a year old, you're probably upside down in it. I'd keep it. If you want something more exciting in your life, take up another hobby. A new vehicle won't fix your boredom problem.

I just got rid of an F150 Lariat crew cab after 5 years......it was average and I don't miss it one bit. Gas mileage sucked.

Get a carmax quote to buy your Equinox. You never know it might be enough to pay it off. Then you can buy the F150 without a trade and maybe negotiate a better deal. Your payments are likely going to be more, or for a longer tierm, but thats the cost of dreams.

So about $2K down, and about $700/month for 5 years.

Keep in mind any equity in your current car that you trade in will also reduce the tax in most states

If you owe about $15,000, and it your trade in value is more than that, then it would not be a problem trading it in. Your down payment was just sunk (unrecoverable) costs covering the depreciation. Taking it to Carmax or other car buying service is a good idea to get a second opinion on the value, but I would make sure about the sales tax in your state regarding trade ins like IShootNikon said. I know in Texas, if you trade in a $17,000 car on a $37,000 car, you only pay taxes on the difference of $20,000. While if you sold it to Carmax, you would pay taxes on the full $37,000. That is about $1,063 more in taxes. So Carmax would have to pay you at least $18,063 to make sense. Otherwise you lose money in the deal.

Good luck with it!

Get on autotrader/cars.com/craigslist/etc and see what private listings of a similar Equinox are going for then consider selling privately.

But $40k on an F-150 is ridiculous in my book. If you want a truck, just because no particular utility reason, wait for gas prices to go back up and for their demand to go back down.
