"When US taxpayers footed a $50 billion bill for the bailout of General Motors in 2009, few could have guessed that the biggest of the Detroit “Big Three” (GM, Chrysler, Ford) would go on to import Chinese cars to the United States Yet just seven years after its publicly-funded and highly-politicized rescue, GM says it will do exactly that: early next year the automaker will begin shipping Chinese-made Buick Envision crossovers across the Pacific for sale at its dealerships, with a plug-in hybrid version of Cadillac’s CT6 flagship sedan to follow. Anyone who believed that GM’s bailout would create a bulwark against a long-feared flood of Chinese cars might be puzzled to find the very same automaker championing Chinese imports. In fact, this move is just the latest in a pattern that dates back to 2009, when GM received a secretive Chinese “bailout” that appears to have turned America’s largest automaker into a Trojan horse for its Chinese partner."
GM cars are popular in China; GM got in there early on, has been manufacturing in China as well as exporting US-made vehicles there, and GM nameplates have a luxury and quality image that the newly prosperous Chinese crave.
I don't see anything particularly sinister about all this; it sounds like GM is simply going where the profits are. Also, manufacturing in China is bound to be cheaper than in the U.S. or Europe, so vehicles will both be less expensive and have a higher profit margin, hence the company will make more money, hence the company will have a higher stock price, hence the company can afford to reinvest billions to research and develop new vehicles. Capitalism, my dear fellow, capitalism.
The Autoworker unions will be a thing of the past once automakers wait for all current members to die and automakers are busy moving all production overseas.
You'll see Chinese made cars become more in common than ever. China already owns Volvo they may buy more brands in the future to plot their entry into the US auto market.

Just a point of contention.
A Chinese company, Geely, owns Volvo but the vehicles are still manufactured in Sweden.
Also, if the new XC90 is any indication, then Chinese ownership may not necessarily be a bad thing.
Really simple. If the car is made in China you are not forced to buy it. You can simply buy a car made somewhere else.
Most people won't know. Tahoes at one time were made in Mexico. May be they still are. Did anybody know that? And after skirting our environmental and labor laws and idling factories did they sell them any cheaper here? Trump has the right solution. You are not going to enrich yourself by skirting our laws.
