I'd stay with gas -- it's readily available around the country, the infrastructure is in place.
Battery: Might be OK in a local short trip service but currently has a high first cost and high environmental impact. Long distance requires supplemental engine anyway.
Fuel Cell: Not ready for prime time, infrastructure not in place.
Natural Gas: Great choice for some areas but again, the infrastructure is not in place nationally to support it.
Compressed Air: Way to short range. No infrastructure.
Veg Oil: Limited supply. Takes energy to make when the total cycle of growing and processing the original product is included. Really only useful in limited quantities where it can be made as a recycled byproduct of another industry but no where near enough to be a real impact.
The real reason someone hasn't made a viable alternative to gas/diesel is that it's easily handleable, storable, reasonable energy density and infrastructure friendly. That's a hard combination to beat.
Actually, I'd stick with what I have, gas/hybrid Prius. It's not my favorite car to drive, but for what it saves me in fuel costs, I can live with it! I've driven it 35,000 miles since buying it a little over a year ago, and total fuel costs have been about $1,200. I used to spend that much in diesel fuel on one vacation trip in my old pickup (when fuel prices were higher).
Electric. As far as it comes with 300 range and free battery replacement in 5 years.
Electric is electric. It's cheap to refuel and has amazing driving/vehicle control opportunities.
NG or LP are horrendously expensive and lack power. Also, wait till winter steps in.
Oil? Where am I supposed to get it from?
Hydrogen? Weill.... God save it leaks....
Otherwise, there used to be cars running on wood. Very popular WW2 times.

I don't want no hassle... I want something that I can refill anywhere and all mechanics understand so I'd stick with gas. I refuse to buy a prius because they don't warranty their batteries for the long haul... 10 years I'm talking about... auto makers idea of a car's lifespan differs from a lot of peoples. That and it's just a pretty cold climate out here, not ideal for Prius use.
