Today my BMW 335i (08) had an interesting issue, put it into reverse and pressed the gas, but nothing. The car then started shaking and turned off. A quick error message flashed before it turned off that read something along the lines of "Engine Differential...." Didn't catch it all. Turned it back on, tried "D" and "Reverse" again, still nothing. I let it sit for about 15 minutes, tried it again and now everything stills to be in working order.
Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? Differential going bad?
Unlikely it has anything to do with the mechanical differential gears in the rear drive. Probably the "Differential" refers to a mismatch in engine speed with - something else.
See if you can get a code reader on it.
There is a reason the old E30 BMW 3 series cars are going up in value, but the later models are not.
