I know I get a bit nervous when I see other folks pumping gas while talking on their cell phones.
I will avoid using the pump next to these folks but you can't control who pulls up next to you or across from you and gets out yacking on their phones.
First of all they aren't fully paying attention to what they are doing, did they remember to discharge any static electricity before pumping, will just the act of being on a phone while pumping create a spark? Can't they wait to talk until they're done pumping?
NO... I have been around gasoline pumps for ages and NEVER had any problems....
What about people who smoke when pumping gas??? Or kids playing video games, etc....
Gasoline is just not going to explode... Even if there is a source of spark nearby.. Just think the pumps are electric.. So why don't they explode from that????
in order for gasoline to light off, there has to be a combustible mixture at the source of the of the spark. most of the time the mixture is far too lean to combust, but when conditions are right it will go off though usually in the immediate area giving you time to react to the situation.
This is what a pump fire looks like. If it happens just leave it in and go for the emergency shut off. They don't just explode like in the movies. And don't rub your clothes and get in and out of the vehicle while pumping.
Now, I will be. I have heard of static on people's clothes that will sometimes come in contact with the gasoline and boom, but I never really knew about the cell phone danger. A lot of things we don't even think of until we are made aware of it, even the most seemingly innocuous things. I remember watching a scene from the old 80s movie with Martin Sheen (?) called The Believers and his wife went out to the kitchen in bare feet and there was some spilled liquid, water on the floor and she stood on top of it and then plugged in a coffee maker and she was electrocuted. I never forgot that scene.
Yes. It also makes me mad that they are so selfish as to risk the lives of everyone around in order to talk about something that is probably not important.

Tell that to the family that didn't come away from refueling their boat at the dock. I say better safe than sorry.
