Scary how many believe and propagate urban legends. But then more than half of the American adults think the world is only 6000 years old. The gullible is among us.
If you're referring to the OP, I did not start this thread to propagate an urban legend.
Some of the responses have been enlightening and I've done a little more research so feel more at ease with the idea.
NO... I have been around gasoline pumps for ages and NEVER had any problems....
What about people who smoke when pumping gas??? Or kids playing video games, etc....
Gasoline is just not going to explode... Even if there is a source of spark nearby.. Just think the pumps are electric.. So why don't they explode from that????
Well...this isn't entirely accurate.
First of all, those elec pumps are intrinsically safe so they are double insulated against sparks or ignition.
The gasoline itself will not explode, it's the vapors that are very dangerous. The problem with gasoline vapors is they do not dissipate like natural gas fumes do because they are heavier than air. So yeah, someone with a cigarette in their mouth, even though they look like an idiot are probably not going to cause an explosion, but if they drop it on the ground or a lit match it could very well ignite the fumes on the ground that would follow right up to the gas tank and see ya later.
I see very little danger from cellphones myself while pumping gas. But I'm just not going to do it.

No problem. Next time I'm at the gas pumps I won't be tempted to tell someone to put their phone away
I get nervous anytime anyone is on their phone around me because it has become evident people cant do anything and be on the phone at the same time.
To the OPs point I do get nervous when people are on the phone at the gas pump but I also believe that if there are signs everywhere telling you NOT to do something there is no real reason TO do it

sitting back in the car while pumping will build up static charge. getting out to grab the nozzle mite ignite fumes.

No, because I'm busy washing my windows and not worried about some jerk catching their car on fire...

And you're allowed to drive, with such petty concerns? How do you handle more serious, or mildy more serious automobile related things?
