My daughter hit a curb and dented a steel wheel and the damage caused a bubble to form on the side wall.
I put a spare on the car in order to drive it to a tire place tomorrow.
the tread depth on my tires are not quite at the wear bars and I'm estimating the tires could take me until the beginning of next winter before needing to replacement.
I usually replace all 4 when their lower in that case since less then year away. If you're considering two I've always heard replace the two on same axle at a time if the tread wear is lower (ie: none brand new tires really). Simply because uneven tread depth, or different tread patterns if you don't buy the exact same tire model, on the same axle could cause the car to potentially loose control in wet conditions (since the tires would be reacting differently from each other). What I've heard but I don't have any hard data to back that up...would require Google searching or more replies here.
Great catch on the bubble in side wall...some people will drive with that until failure.
You may already have your sources but remember to check the ratings on new tires you end up getting and not just "get a set of Goodyear's" or "just get some" Yokahoma's"....can't rely on a brand name as they all have currently low rated tire models for things such as wet traction. But here's some links to tire ratings for passenger cars for your consideration, just change the tire size to match the car:
Replace the front two. Then when the other two go bad buy new ones put these on where the old ones were. I usually rep,ace tires when at about 15% tread. They are usually pretty done by then anyway
"Not quite at the wear bars" tells me that it's about time to replace them anyway. I'd change all four. They'll be safer, stop quicker, skid less, handle wet roads much better.
Just found bubbles in 2 of my tires after 50K miles. I'm probably at the same amount of wear as you (i got 70K out of my last set of identical tires), and I'm electing to just replace all 4 now and be done with it.
I'll keep the good 2 tires and probably CL them for $20 each or so. They are still usable and my tire is a popular tire so im sure I could sell them.
