Meanwhile the Japanese/Korean makes are building in the US. According to the manufacturer my Nissan Frontier is 94% US built in TN and my wife's Hyundai is 92% US built in AL.
I'm sorry but $37 per hour to work in a factory is crazy, the COL in Michigan isn't THAT high.
To be fair the guys working in the Michigan plants are probably buying 2016 Toyota's while the guys in the Nissan and Honda plants are driving 15 YO F150's.
Ford is moving production of the Focus to Mexico in order to make room for the new Ranger and another SUV in the existing Wayne factory. This makes great sense for a couple of reasons:
- Mexico has more free trade agreements with other nations - especially South America. Combine that with a lower cost of production, Ford can send Focus' from Mexico more profitably and without a tariff to those other nations
- The Ranger and the new SUV will be more profitable than the Focus and that extra profitability vis a vis the Focus allows Ford to make them in the US versus Mexico
- The sales of small cars like the Focus are on the downturn once again. Having them made where they sell better makes sense in order to reduce the cost of transportation from the factory to the marketplace.

Wait until the TPP gets its rubber stamp.
Your wife's Hyundai is 100 % hers & your Nissan Is 50% hers.
Ford has repeatedly said it will not sell the new ranger in the US. So more than likely it will build a suv in the cars place.
Actually the new national contract with the UAW gave Wayne the Ranger and a new SUV in exchange for moving the Focus/C Max to Mexico.
