The feds say you should not isntall a used cat, but I did. A new cat/header assy is nearly a grand from MINI plus a core. Yes even MINI wants the old cat back. I ended up buying a used one private party
Two kids buy a car for $200 just to get the cat and they sell it online lets say for $400 and some one buys it? Wow, what a business. Do you get a guarantee with the used one? I am thinking no.

The guy has a junk car sitting in his driveway for years and doesn't care enough about the appearance to get the lead out of his behind and do something, anything, and now you expect he is going to disassemble it and sell it for parts?
If there were any pride or ambition involved it would have been gone three years ago.
Take the money and never look back, or think about it for a few more years and thrill the neighbors some more...

The cats are worth money to scrap yards for the precious metal like platinum in them. There is also a theft problem especially in parking lots.

This.

Exchanging your crappy yard car for cash with essentially no effort on your part seems like a pretty obvious move.

It'd maybe be a different story if the OP were planning to part it out or junk it himself, but that's obviously not the case.
