Oh, I love the Fox body Stangs. My son doesnt "get" em, and often pokes fun at them, but he just doesnt understand. Its a timeless classic! Nice, simple, clean body lines, easy to mod, cheap to own, quite reliable, and the best sounding V8 this side of Ferrari. I preferred the LX to the GT, but would readily take either.
Yep, great cars! When I was in high school my buddy had a scarlet red and silver 89 5.0 GT. But it had the ugly "turbine" wheels, so we put the "pony" wheels on it. Then swapped out the GT tail lights and put on the LX tail lights. That's when we were hooked. We started putting on exhaust, headers, H-pipe, etc. And my sister's boyfriend at the time had a black 91 5.0 notchback. We would always race. Good times!
I'd say that for the early Gen X'ers the Fox bodies were definitely big. For later Gen X'ers like myself (born in '77), by the time we were really into the car scene the JDM craze had already begun, and the new Mustangs were out with a decidedly less cool body style at the time. Most of my buddies were into modding Civics, Integras, Nissan 240SX's and the like to try to make them faster than the Mustangs and Camaros of the time. I always really liked the Fox bodies, though. A friend of mine had one of the dog slow 4-banger versions back in the mid-90s. I think those things had something pathetic like 88hp stock (it was an '88 or '89 LX)? He drove it like he stole it, though, and it still handled pretty decently. He eventually moved up into a newer GT and now has a 2014 GT500.
GT always looked so much better once the cheese grater tailight covers were remove. Night and day difference.
Those are probably my favorite parts of the later GT hatchbacks.
I saw this 1991 LX 2.3 automatic last weekend...at UofSC Admitted Students Day, so it's probably Gen X or younger owned. 1991 Ford Mustang LX by FordTorino73, on Flickr
I like those early mid 80s Mustang GT styling. Clean lines, black stripe down the center of the hood, and no excessive plastic body panels that came later on the GT.
My sister's first car was an 81 Mercury Capri. It had good styling but she had a slow engine, the Ford 200 CID inline 6. Reliable, but turtle slow. I could blow the doors off that car with my 1.8L Elantra. If you're in the market for this generation Mustang, don't forget about the Capri. For those in UK and Australia, this is not the same Capri you may remember.
I wonder if they are going to be collectors cars for Gen X so far the 1993 Cobra would be the most valuable and desirable if bone stock numbers matching low mileage car then maybe the Saleen SSC and also maybe the Highway Patrol Interceptor Mustangs.
Back in the day it was for sure the best bang for the buck. I paid right at $10K for my 87 LX 5.0 hatch with AC, brand new, when I was 22 yrs old. It was quick in comparison to almost everything domestic. GNs and Vettes were about the only competition from this side of the Atlantic.
Mine now has Cobra disc brakes, Bullitt wheels, black leather interior, and a broken 306K mile stock motor. I still miss driving it daily, but hopefully it will be back on the road soon.
Yep, my first new car at 20 was a Scarlet Red 5.0 GT. My friends called it "the closer." I was only 20 and still dating. I would pick girls up for our first date in my dad's K-car. If they wanted to see me for a second date, I'd pick her up in the GT and it was game over! I eventually met my wife that way, that's how I knew she really liked me.
Who knew 25 years later I'd have a daily driver with over 400HP? These are the days indeed...
I'm pretty sure Gen X's "muscle car" is a Civic with a vtec engine swap and a huge fart can exhaust....which sadly would be faster than those 5.0s heh.
i think that is Gen Y
