^^^^^ This is great advice. Any car, especially a used car, can be fine one moment and not the next. If you are depending on that car to get to work, you need a few bucks set aside to be able to get it fixed immediately. I would put at least a grand aside and forget it is there. That will solve most moderate problems. Failing that, have a clean credit card with some balance on it so you can use that.
Don't let owning a car scare you. Buy a clean, low mileage one and change the oil every 3,000 miles. Some will say that is overkill, but oil is the cheapest thing you will ever put into that engine. My one Son has a Suburban with about 220,000 on it that he uses to carry his instruments, and the original engine has never had the heads off. He RELIGIOUSLY changes the oil and filter every 3,000 and maintains the rest of it as needed.
If you are only putting 25 miles a day on it, you should be fine.
