I recently drove one, a rental car, with only 19K miles on it...there was something seriously wrong with that Ford Focus - it was like a death trap! It did *not* accelerate properly!

I would say a Honda CR-V, Acura RDX (used), or a Subaru Forester or Outback.

Here is what I want in a vehicle:

- fun to drive with decent acceleration and power (at least 0-60 in 7 seconds)
- good cornering ability in the canyons (no vehicles that drive like boats which means no trucks)
- good cargo capacity for my camping trips
- ability to go on gravel roads etc. without too much trouble (I think most cars can make it), but no cars with unusually low ground clearance. I don't plan to do any offroading but sometimes one needs to go on a dirt road or something.
- light towing about once a month - my motorcycle and a trailer, under 1000 lbs. most cars used to have a 1500 lb towing limit, now most cars say "N/A" for towing, not sure why
- all the usual comfort and safety features
- good styling (this is subjective)
- under $30k price point

The Mazda CX-3 looks awesome but it is ridiculously underpowered so not sure about that, if they had the 184hp motor in it I would've considered it. The CX-5 i'm not sure how it drives.
Ford Escape? Get the 2.0L Turbo motor and it's very quick and handles well even for a SUV/crossover.

Used CTS-V Wagon probably can't find one for $30k though.

Get the Subaru Forester. It is very quick and will go anywhere. The Forester is the most popular car in Maine. Take a look at the Subaru commercial where police officers and tow truck drivers marvel and say, "They lived". It ends up with a family saying, "we lived!". I have a friend who hit a moose and a very large boulder. She stopped instantly. She is fine and broke one ankle in the crash.

Get the Forester.

I'd go with one of the the Subaru WRX-STI models.
Although in todays traffic the 'Fun to drive' designation is definitely open to interpretation.
