I'm going to Minneapolis in 2 weeks, the only issue with our vehicle though is the air conditioner does not work. We have 3 fans installed, 2 at the front and one at the back. It's okay at night but in the day during 80+ temps, it barely helps. We are discussing renting a car to go up there, though I personally do not want to do that, it will cost a hell of a lot more. Is there any suggestions of what to do to further cool the car, and how viable/economical is renting anyway? We are very low budget.

My last car didn’t even have AC in it and I drove it in temperatures well over 80 degrees in every western state including the desert southwest. I even drove through Death Valley with temperatures near triple digits. Suggestion: roll down the windows.

Driving at night works well. During the day, just keep sipping on cups of ice water. Might use a small spray bottle to mist yourself. Put ice in the spray bottle.

Rolling down the windows don't do too much. They recently went to Houston (I didn't go, and thank God cuz I woulda melted) and the heat was unbearable. We're also travelling with a chihuahua, who when he went to Houston, got very hot.

What is broken with the AC? Does it just need a recharge?

I wish I had one of those Disney World fan bottles lol

We are leaving at or before Midnight so until about east central Kansas give or take, it will be dark. My one issue is even though its cooler at night, you can't see much scenery or take much pictures.

We are considering building our own make shift air conditioning unit, and I hope that helps. I'm definitely bringing the kitty spray bottle. I'm more concerned for the dog, though.

We had people look at it, and its a 1,000 dollar fix. Not just the AC, also the heater. This needs to be fixed before December because we are driving through the Rockies during that month lol.

Check rental car prices in your area on a site like Hotwire or Priceline, as you can save a good deal compared to regular rental rates. Sometimes you can get very good bargains, under $20/day with unlimited mileage for a vehicle that has air conditioning. I have seen small cars that are around $10-$15 a day on Hotwire at times, in various cities. It would be easier/safer to rent than traveling in heat that can make it unsafe for the dog as canines are more vulnerable to extreme heat than humans, especially smaller dogs.

It depends upon how long you need the car and what day you start and end the rental as to the price variance, but I should think you could reasonably expect to find a small Hyundai or Kia at DFW for $200/week or so.

If it comes down to it, 10-15 a day isn't terrible. I'm gonna try to see if we can make a makeshift AC, but otherwise, I really don't want to subject the poor dog to 14 hours in a hot car.

That will make for a miserable trip.

Sure you can roll down the windows and get blasted by hot air and maybe that won't be too uncomfortable for you. But you'll also get killed in mileage by interstate driving with windows open. It would create a lot of drag.

I say suck it up and rent the car. If you're that low budget to where it's going to be a miserable trip, you're probably better off not going.
