Mercedes just went to it around 2009, I was talking to the service manager about it on Thursday. It's almost hidden, took me a long time to find it on a ML63 I was looking at online. Here's a 2015 S600
^^^ So...judging by that picture, it seems like a really good reason these have gone away, along with no bench seats, is because everything is shift by wire now.
As stated there still are some. I prefer them on column for automatic as other wise they take up console space. They as pictured have not gone away for shift by wire.
Personally, I've never seen the purpose of a console shifter for an automatic. It just takes up a lot of space and is in the way.
My tiny fiesta has two levers on the steering wheel plus a shifter between the seats which takes up a lot of hip and knee room in what is already a small compartment. My Ram has 2 levers as well on the column but one doubles as a shift lever as well. An already roomy area is even more roomy because there is no shifter between the seats, plenty of hip room, knee room and space for a giant fold down console. Makes perfect sense. My brother has an F150 with the fixed center console/shifter in that as well and the interior seems more closed in then my Ram, though both are the same size vehicle.
I hate center shifters as they make absolutely no sence whatsoever!
