So I was reminded of this issue because of another thread on here and I figured I'd ask.
On my Grand Am when I attempt to use the left turn signal sometimes it blinks faster than normal. Now I was always told that this happens when one of the turn signal bulbs was out, so my wife used both the left and right signals while I went around and checked all the bulbs. All of them worked. What I have noticed it it is not always blinking faster than normal, and in fact seems to be normal more often than fast. Is this telling me that one of of my bulbs is about to go or is there something else going on?
Probably something else. But.. I'd replace the bulbs, because that'll cost about $5.
It's basically measuring either the voltage drop or current draw. If it's off from spec, then the fast blink, because it assumes a bulb is out.
But, the actual flasher could be the culprit. Could be corrosion..
I'd start with the bulbs. that gives you a general look at everything, other than the flashers, and.. Then you don't have to worry about getting pulled over for a bulb being out since they seem to blow up 10 seconds after you check them.
Many years ago, had a similar problem. But in my case, not only was the flasher blinking double speed but both left and right dashboard lights were blinking. Replacing flasher did not fix problem. Got the wiring schematic for the car. Really odd but the brake fail switch on the master cylinder also ran thru the flasher for a blinking light on the dash. Disconnected the wire on master cyl and flasher/dash lights/directional worked correctly.
Just asked my wife because she drives it more, it has never flashed quickly for the right, only the left.
To the best of my knowledge, that USUALLY indicates a bad bulb or connection (corrosion, etc.). It could just as well be a partially broken wire on the left side, but that doesn't happen as often as a bad bulb or connection.
Send your wife on a couple of more laps around the car. Try the directionals only and with the brake pedal pressed. You may have your answer regarding the bulbs.
