This is an oft-repeated fallacy. That people buy cars for the prestige status, etc.
I drive a Mercedes and I wipe my you-know-what with the brand and the symbol. I could not care less. What I like about the current lower-priced Mercedes cars is the stunning interior design. No other $40,000 car comes close to this interior in terms of design or quality.
have you seen the CLA? its really horrid in almost everyway
There are a lot of 2 or 3 year old CPOs on dealer lots with very enticing price tags. Today I saw an impeccable 2014 E350 4Matic with 19,000 miles go for $35K. This is Toyota territory. Is there a catch? What is left out of the factory warranty?
I don't know much about Mercedes except the E and C class are the base bottom end line of Mercedes from what i understand. The S class is the top end and the AMG sport package adds much more value.
My DD is a 2006 BMW 525Xi, I've had it for a couple of years and 20K worth of miles including a trip out to the left coast, through the mountains of Wyoming and through the snows of Michigan, my maintnence costs have been $600 for tires and oil. No weird stuff, no big trouble, no nightmares.
My lovely bride has an Audi A4 Avant that is also blessed with reliability. Tires and oil. And it's not like we go through tires, but we like good skins for winter, with decent tread as we can get some good lake effect snowstorms that are easily capable of a foot or more of snow in a dump.
OTOH, we had a Mercedes ML 320 that did collect a lot of weird little issues that keep it from being driven but just stupid stuff.
Neither car goes to the dealer every time they beckon us in with some "service" the tickler in the service system comes up with. It's not needed, it's a revenue generator for the stealership, as the dealers make their money on service, and used cars, not new cars.
