Need some help here guys.

I can only afford a cheap car which I need for about 4,000 miles a year. I did some research on cars that do last, and found decent makes/models within $2,000 that are around 18 years old. I will be buying from a person only (no dealers). If it runs for 3-5 years, that's fine with me.

I don't have a trusted mechanic so last time I had to hire a randomly found one to travel with me to buyer's location for inspection. Long story short, I wasted money on that inspection because that car got no transmission fluid at all, and it was ME who insisted that the lazy mechanic check the fluid. After we found a dry transmission, he said it's not a big deal because "he can fix it for me later" (I'm sure he can...). It was such a rip off... I didn't buy it of course.

How can I find a trusted mechanic in NYC area that would be very thorough, responsible and affordable??? Someone who you could trust you life? If there are such mechanics on this forum, please respond. I will have to study your message history.... Or please PM me for a contact of such a person. Got to be honest people in NYC, I know.

I found another car ready for inspection but need a trusted mechanic.

Finding a trusted mechanic is obviously not easy. It seems trial and error is the only way. Your local forum might have someone who knows somebody local who can help you. I'm sorry that I have no answer other than trial and error.

Trusted mechanics are everywhere just look for busy shops. Shops wouldn't be busy if the mechanics are bad.

They all have decent reviews but in real life there are many crooks.

It can be a serious car enthusiast, but trustworthy... Got to be some on this forum.

Look at the reviews on Cartalk.com under the mechanics files section. You can search for mechanics by city. You can also look for reviews on yelp.com .

What makes/models are you looking at?

You may be able to find a brand specific enthusiast forum that could help you find someone in your area.
