Manual I get too bored with automatics so I'll tough it out in traffic.
That's exactly why I tough it out with a stick....even in traffic, with an automatic, I start nodding off or get totally distracted because I'm bored. Haha. Good luck and have fun when not in traffic!

Seriously. Lots of extra room. Every time you drive up to the person in front of you and hit your brakes you gotta shift. Take it slow, don't get bent if people get in front of you, and just cruise along slow in low gear. You'll do just fine
Ever since I started driving a manual, I've decided that I'll never own another auto again. Guess that limits me to hatchbacks, smaller sedans, Tacoma type trucks, and VWs (they seem to have a manual version of everything).
You make is sound like that's a bad thing. Not everyone is an enthusiast and wants to deal with manually shifting a car. You don't lose your man card because you prefer an automatic.
Same as people who like A/C or power everything (windows, seats, locks, steering). These make things easier and more comfortable to drive.
Modern amenities and features have make driving modern cars more enjoyable, safer, and yes EASIER. It's not such a bad thing
I don't disagree.
What the future holds are automobiles that make things so easy and comfortable for the person inside that one does not have to drive it. In reality what we lose is the driving experience, a little at a time as we get fatter. Driverless automobiles are coming
We're not talking "advanced" auto options like triptronic, right? Or auto's coming with special features? I dunno, my Mazda 3 wasn't any cheaper than an auto. Neither were a handful of previous cars. Most base models I looked at 5+ years ago (granted, that is the last time I looked so I could be completely wrong), were auto. I just looked at the Mazda website and sure enough, the stick was about $1k less. Hmmm. Maybe it was due to what was available that it wasn't any cheaper, my car was the only one in a 250 mile radius, so maybe they jacked up the price. Hey!
Back in 2009 I bought a Subaru Forester with a manual transmission, and it was around $1,100 cheaper than one with an automatic transmission.
I'm a newly licensed driver that has only driven automatics so I'd be learning to drive manual.
I've been driving for nearly 50 years now. In that time, I've owned more manuals than automatics and prefer a stick for many applications. But driving in heavy traffic like you have in LA would be a pain. In your situation I'd go with an automatic.
