The large diesel trucks used to get better fuel economy until the EPA forced all of the emissions equipment onto them. My 08 F250 had all of the emissions equipment deleted and got 21-24 mpg city/hwy. Considering the truck weighed almost 7k lbs and was 4wd I was impressed. My 2012 Ram 2500 is bone stock and gets a whopping 13mpg regardless of city or highway driving.

I'm not really all that interested in expensive, upscale, luxury vehicles such as BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, et. al.

How about the ecodiesel dodge Ram 1500? A light-duty pickup truck with an efficient diesel engine, introduced in 2014. Same engine as in the diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The only non-premium/luxury vehicles currently available with a diesel engine are the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size pickups. There are also versions of Chevy/GMC, Ford and RAM full-size pickups with diesel engines.

The Chevy Cruze was redesigned for the 2016 model year. The diesel version will not be available until the 2017 model, which should be released soon (although the diesel may not launch with the rest of the 2017 Cruze lineup). It is probable that Chevrolet will try to make the car available as soon as possible to capture some of the VW buyback customers.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with a 3.0L EcoDiesel as a $4500 option on Limited and higher trim levels. The cheapest version, a Limited 2WD with no other options, would have a sticker price of just over $43k. So it falls into the premium/near-luxury category, IMO.

BMW appears to be the largest purveyors of diesel at the moment. You can get a 328 sedan, 328 Sports Wagon, 535, X3 or X5 with diesel power. All BMW diesels are xDrive (AWD) models, with the exception of the 328d Sedan which can be had in RWD or xDrive. The least expensive of these is the 328d RWD sedan, which costs $40,845 (without any options).

As mentioned earlier, the Jaguar F-Pace is available with a diesel. The Porsche Cayenne Diesel is currently unavailable. I'm not sure if Mercedes-Benz offers any diesels currently (because I don't care for their cars, so I don't follow them).
