2010 Toyota Tundra 4x4, normally brakes seem to work fine, no shaking when braking, but when im going downhill for a distance and brake to slow the truck down (downhill on mountainside), I feel a good shake in the steering wheel. Is this the ABS causing this or is it my rotors? I can't figure out why it shakes when going downhill and not using the brakes otherwise?

Does it shake when you apply then brakes when slowing down from highway speeds? If so that's warped rotors. If that's not happening then more than likely its something else that's causing your down hill braking issue and not your rotors.

I don't notice it any other time except when going down hill and braking. It's a 7% grade for a couple miles down, so I didn't know if that had anything to do with it.

Your abs would kick in if you start to slide while braking. Do you feel the shaking/vibrating in your brake pedal?

It's hard to miss ABS. You will know when it kicks in.

If you want an example of it.. Go on a gravel road and slam on the brakes.. That should trigger it for a few seconds.

Certainly sounds like the rotors might be warped.. When did you last have a brake job done? If that's the ONLY place it's happening.. Not sure i'd freak out about it just yet.

I"m definitely not sliding.

Good question about the brake pedal, I'm not sure. I'll test it. I've made an appointment for next Friday. I need a front end alignment anyway so I'm gonna have them check the rotors.

Original brakes, truck is at 86K miles.

Have the front brakes done. It's time.
Have them check the rear also.

You have done well to go that long. We had a 1996 4Runne, and live at 600' so all downhill every day. We had to replace the rotors the very time we replaced the pads due to warping. There is a lot of weight with the engine, transfer case and transmission, and the rotors ge thinner every year to reduce weight for better gas mileage. When the antilock kicks in you can hear the motor, I'd bet it's warped rotors. Easy for the mechanic to check.

Thanks everyone. Will get this taken care of next week. I'm actually very easy on brakes but we didn't move to a mountainous area till a year ago which explains why they lasted so long. Had my bmw's brakes changed for the first time at 106K miles.
