I just bought a car. 2013 Honda Civic EX Coupe. It's the first time I've had a car in 7 years, first time having a car in an urban area.
it's also white and it gets dirty easily. Nothing crazy, I'm not dealing with dirt roads. I've been driving it through the auto carwash near my office about every other week. Occasionally a bird mistakes my car for their nest and I've had to whip it through once a week.
They have all those options but I settle for just a wash and rinse. They have cards that are "Buy 4 get 2 free" but only for the "Basic Plus" and above. This scheme would make the basic plus cheaper than the basic wash.
But the basic plus includes "polish wax". I know that a quickie polish wax at drive through isn't the same as an actual polish and wax job but would it still be bad to do it too often?
Also, I live in an apartment with street parking so a basic handwash at home isn't a viable option.
Yes, those hand wash places will do more damage than good. I would stop using them as when they dry they are using dirty towels and end up scratching your car while trying to remove dirt

I'm not using a hand wash place, it's one of those drive through and the machine does the work. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I usually go during lunch, it's a block from my office and I just let it air dry.

In that case it wouldn't hurt. Not sure it really helps either though.
I would go to self service and use this product. It works like magic. One second car is not beading. Spray this stuff on and spray off with pressure washer and voila, instant protection right in front of your eyes. CarPro Hydro2 Touchless Silica Sealant, spray on car wax
When I lived in an apartment, I would just go through a drive through, but then pull into the vacuum area and dry the car myself. At that point, if the car wash wasn't packed, I would go ahead and hand wax the car right there.
As others have said, don't go to the car washes where they have people towel dry the car. I've personally seen then drop towels on the ground and promptly pick it up and continue to dry someone's car. Who knows how many vehicles they have ruined.
Take your car to any two bit car wash and get it as clean as you can. Clay bar the thing. You can do that under a tree in a park. Buy a bottle of C.A.R Bulletproof and apply 2 coats over 2 days. If you can spray a little on a rag and rub on the car, it's that easy on and easier to take off with a micro-fiber towel. Your car will bead and sheet water for the next 4-5 years not to mention you can forget about minor scratches. The stuff is worth every penny it costs if you want to keep the car looking nice. Take it thru a basic touchless car wash after that and it will look like new everytime.
Those drive through car washes with whirling brushes will scratch the paint. No one with an expensive car that knows would ever go through one of these car washes.
Those that are commercially hand washed or had dried also wouldn't have it done.
Tough call. But attempt to find a relative or friend that has a driveway and a hose - and hand wash yourself.

Seriously? Why would putting wax on your paint be bad for it? The opposite actually.

That's a silly statement. You've never seen a european car go thru a carwash? The one I usually go to is full of german cars. Tons of BMW's, MB's, Audi, Porsche. Last time I was there I watched an Aston Martin go thru. This is at a real car wash though; not a gas station one.

.
My dad and my boyfriend both told me waxing your car too much is bad that it would buff of the clear coat. Of course I highly doubt this spray on wash they whirl on through the drive thru is the same as the wax they're referring too.
