In past years I've purchased several off lease rentals and had no problems with them. If you do buy one get the maintenance records for it first and check it out. Many still have some type of warranty on them.
About three years ago, I bought a Chrysler PT Cruiser Turbo Convertible.
a year later, just for grins, I did a Carfax check on it.
It started life as a rental. In Hawaii.
When it was brought back to the mainland, it became a toad behind a motorhome (I know because the lube pump is still in it!).
Other than a computer glitch that required replacing the unit (no, they are not repairable), it has been totally trouble free.
We are very happy with it.
Come to think of it, I should probably run another Carfax on it. I got hit by a red light runner a while back, and after the insurance company fixed it and paid the bill, I got a letter saying they totaled it (yeah, they were confused). I wonder if Carfax shows it as being totaled and rebuilt, with a salvage title??
Nah, no carfax. I don't care. Next year it will qualify for PERMANENT registration, and I will drive it until the wheels fall off, then junk it!
i think the urban myth started with the credible thinking that cars with many owners don't last very long.
it becomes incredible thinking when people conflate a rental with having hundreds of owners.
Personally I would never a rental car unless it was a super deal, but generally I wouldn't for myself.
My grandparents on the other hand however did this back around 2009. They purchased a 2008 Hyundai Sonata that was a rental car. It already had accumulated around 34,000 miles when they purchased it and only had a couple of scratches. My grandfather passed in May of 2015, but my grandmother still drives it regularly and I drive her to South Carolina in it a few times per year. It now has around 80,000 miles and other than a window motor regulator going out on the passenger front door window, I do not think they ever had any trouble out if it. It still runs smooth and shifts smooth.
I think it has had a couple of recalls that were taken care of with no charge.
this is like saying: i would never purchase a condo that was converted from a hotel.
There are a number of those in Florida. Those units are largely purchased to use as short term rentals for their new owners and it's rare for the new owner to actually live there as a primary residence.
I saw some listings in the Enterprise Rent a Car webpage. These are good deals as they have regular scheduled maintenance, and are sometimes dealer maintained under warranty. Enterprise can ship cars across the country to your location for a fee. expect up to $5000 of savings going this route.
