What is involved in returning a leased car? (lease, insurance, Toyota)

My son returned to the dealer his leased RAV4 two weeks ago. Basically, someone took the car in and told him somebody from Toyota will come in about a week, inspect it and let him know what, if any, he owes. He didn't ask for or got any sort of paper work. He also immediately canceled the insurance on the car. It made sense at the time but I now read that probably was not a wise move. For all we know the car could still be in his name because Toyota has not contacted him. Would canceling insurance put him in the "uninsured" category even though he obviously had no car to insure? When is he formally off the lease?
He needs to reach out to the dealer he dropped it off at and Toyota Financial Services (if that is who leased him the car) ASAP to find out the status of the lease and the car. Typically, inspections are done a couple of weeks before drop off which your son should have arranged.
