I've never used Sumimoto, but I've had good experience with General Altimax tires.

See if you can find a Kumho in your size. They tend to be a highly rated "off" brand.

That's scary. I'm curious to see what you defined as "quite a bit of mileage on them."

We usually get used tires when we can find them. A lot of fleet cars change our their tires around 30,000 miles and they still have a lot of life left. The are very cheap. Generally $20 or less. You do not get a warranty, but I do not think I have ever used a tire warranty.

With used tires, brand is irrelevant, unless you are getting into high end speed rated or truck tires.

My stepfather swore by Cooper tires. I would never buy used tires unless I was never going to be on the highway with them.

Using a gauge, probably another 15 to 20 thousand. The tread was still well over the wear bars.

I know, I started checking them at 50K and they just weren't wearing. At 50 they had very little wear from the original tread depth.

Simple Tire sells all kinds of tires that you've never heard of. Might want to look there.
I used to buy Kumhos before anyone ever heard of them.
They were good and cheap. Now they're not so cheap.

I put Hankook Dynapros on my truck, so far they've been great, they hydroplane less than the Bridgestones they replaced.

I suggest shopping Tire Rack as well, sometimes the bigger brands will offer rebates. I bought Goodyear Comfortreds for my Sonata and I think I got a $80 rebate back.

I put Continental Pure Contact tires on one of our cars. Top rated by Consumer Reports. Comfortable ride, low noise and good handling. I will do them again next time I need tires.
