They still need a human to sit behind the wheel in case of a problem and to do certain things so what's the point?

I have high functioning clients who cannot drive normal cars, and a couple of friends with Parkinsons.

In the long run, it will be safety and I'm willing to bet efficiency.

Is it a gimmick or something that will sell more cars?

There are so many safety devices built into cars and the latest are the back up cameras, the weakest link in many new cars that cause the most accidents is the driver. If the driver is removed from making decisions that distract from the road such as texting or drinking or drugged driving we should all be a bit safer right?

I think we will see more cars in the near future that will be able to drive on their own.
Humans will always be the weak link.

Self driving cars would be a huge quality of life improvement for those with disabilities like blindness, paralysis, etc.

But you know these self driving advocates/developers are so cocky, like computers and robotics are perfect. They are talking about building cars without steering wheels. So when you are going 40 mph and the computer gets the blue screen of death or gets hacked into or spent too much time around salt water you will be royally SOL.

They're for lazy people who already hate driving and see it as a chore. Any self-respecting car guy would NEVER own one.

There are no self driving cars.
Don't expect them to become available for purchase anytime soon.

We are currently at Autonomy Level 2.
Trouble starts when drivers think their Level 2 car is a Level 4 car.
Some automakers are strongly considering skipping Level 3 because humanoids are really lousy at "taking over".

I used to think this until someone brought up drinking and driving. Sure would be nice to have a few beers with dinner and not worry about DUIs.

Isnt it much cheaper to call a cab for one night versus having to spend umpteen thousands on the car, plus interest and insurance?
