I'd love to get a hybrid. I commute about 20 miles into a city every day. But I have two children (6 and 4) and my car is the primary family car. I need space: storage for groceries, suitcases for road trips, etc. I think the Prius V is my best bet, but I'll gladly take suggestions for other options. TIA!!

Ford CMax... More power, similar mileage, much cheaper.
It's a plug in hybrid that goes 20 miles on battery power alone for excellent overall mileage.
I loved my Volt, and used it for long distance trips while not using any gas for the commute (up to 45 miles of range on just battery power), but it's cargo capacity MIGHT not be enough for your family's use.
Used 2013 Volts are down to under $15k now, and are GREAT cars with one of the highest owner satisfaction rates.
Otherwise can't beat a Hybrid Tahoe for use with a family.
I've got two kids myself, and I don't think I could jam them into a Prius, plus gear for our family trips we frequently take.
My husband has the Prius C (the coupe) and we squeak into that for family trips. The Prius V (looks more like a wagon) has more interior room.
I didn't realize Tahoe made a hybrid?!? That's interesting. It's probably tricky to parallel park in the city, though, no?
Budget is about 30K, so I know I'm not getting bells and whistles... I want something safe, handles well, enough space for a family, and great gas mileage.

Do you have one? This immediately came up in my searches but I don't know if I've ever seen one in the wild lol. Is it closer in size to a wagon/small SUV or a hatchback?

Wagon/small CUV. Don't own one but I've driven one and was impressed.
Another bonus... it's one of the easiest cars to see out of.
And there are big discounts. Even a Energi Titanium is not going to cost anywhere near $30K.
I have a second generation Prius, which I really like and find plenty comfortable. It's also incredibly reliable and gets good mileage, and any initial concerns about the durability of the batteries have been put to rest over many years of fleet usage.
For most general users I would consider Toyota and Honda to be the going-in default choice: there may be reasons to get something else, but without good reasons I wouldn't do it.
For a bit more room the Prius V looks like an excellent choice.

Toyotas are a known quantity, reliable and boring. Honda hybrids suck badly, however. And ones like the C Max Energi and Volt have proven themselves in years of service, too.
