Well said. A decent Citroën 2CV can be had for $15K-$20K, and I find those interesting.
My hometown is one of the most affluent towns in the Bay Area, and people could afford to drive pretty much whatever they wanted to drive. One of the heirs to the 'Thompson's Water Seal fortune' lived down the street from my best friend (this was in the 70s). Mr. Thompson could afford to drive whatever he wanted to drive. He had two cars....a Nash Metropolitan, and a 57 Chevy Bel Air, both in absolutely perfect condition. It contrast, Mr. Thompson's next door neighbor (a very successful orthodontist and investor) had a customized 911 Carrera, and a customized BMW 3.0CSi.
Well sure, no problem. But no one expects to see a Bentley p,arked right at the entrance to any WalMart. I think the man who got out of it was probably a husband that had dropped off his wife. Nevertheless, whoever exited the car was either disabled (in which case there are disabled spots 20 feet away), or simply snobbish and wanted to be 'noticed'. He did have NC tags on the rear though; maybe they were from 'the beach'.
Here in our area -- no one cares.
I think it was seven years ago, I was sitting in my car at a Mickey D's on Biscayne Blvd in Miami using the Wi-Fi for my laptop. A guy pulled up a few spaces away (no cars between us) in a new Bentley. He got out of the car (the way he was dressed...it was likely his car) and walked into the Mickey D's. He came out with a good sized bag of food, and ate the food in his car before driving away.
A few days ago, I saw a '53 Kaiser Manhattan. While the rocker panels were rusted-out (not at all surprising for any car from that era), it was keeping-up with traffic, and the middle-aged woman driving it was clearly not babying it at all. I think that it is likely to be a daily driver because it had been updated with modern shoulder harnesses and a center-mounted brake light.
They probably opened the doors and got out. Nothing in the interior occupant area is damaged other then the windows.
I agree with this assessment. The car is totalled, but, particularly if they were belted in, the occupants probably got away with just a few scratches, if that.
