All the safety features and gadgets are for the new generation of steering wheel holders. People who can't drive need all these features. A large portion of these new drivers don't deserve a drivers license but it's a money thing for the state so they push them through.
I wish they would get rid of the electric starter.
I mean these lazy kids these days can't hand crank an engine?
Oh and you can keep your fancy heater. That's what driving gloves and scarves are for.
Windsheilds? ...,I'll keep my driving goggles thank you.
Each of my kids has totalled one (or more vehicles) in which the airbags deployed. All of them walked away from the accident with either minor (a split lip and cut eyebrow) injuries from the airbag or none at all.
The kid with the split lip and eyebrow cut did have a broken collar bone from the shoulder harness, he drove into an oak tree at around 60 mph in a 2003 F150.
Two of the others rear ended another vehicle (one in a 1998 Taurus at around 35 mph, the other in a 2013 Fit at 55 or 60 mph). Both walked away with no injuries. From the airbag or otherwise.
The other had an end over end rollover in a 2003 Cavalier after it was clipped by a passing car. The car ended up on its roof. No injuries from the airbag although she cut her knee on a piece of window glass crawling out of the car and needed a couple stitches.
Would they have been any worse if they had only seat-belts and no airbags?
Would they have avoided injury altogether in some of those cases if they had no airbags?
I think you kids need may some further driver training/instruction.

Who knows.
The only accident which was avoidable was the truck into tree. The others, due to the circumstances, were really not. The Taurus accident happened immediately on the other side of the crest of a hill, the person stopped who my son hit had just gotten her car back that day from being rear ended in the same spot a few weeks earlier. Right by a "No Left Turns" sign. She was turning left. The Honda was on the Baltimore Beltway where traffic just stops with no rhyme or reason. There was no bail out option to another lane.
The reality is that airbags were mandated when seat belt use was under 50%. That's why the original requirements included the ability to stop a 180 lb. unbelted occupant. Seat belt use is now over 90%, maybe airbags are redundant now.

Unfortunately, you hit someone from behind, it is your fault period. There are exceptions only in extremely rare circumstance. However sometimes stuff just happens and is not reasonably avoidable, but not very frequently. That is a lot of hits for one family. Good thing that are all Ok.
most kids (mine included) simply do not leave enough space and to not begin stopping soon enough. Drives me crazy: "I see brake lights, why is your foot still on the accelerator" "Well they are still a long way ahead' (or "I am going to charge up on them and then jam on the brakes because I like to watch you replace pads and rotors").

Oh yeah. The Taurus really wasn't, the other driver was charged for the attempt to turn in a no turn area. The Beltway was considered at fault.
Yeah, they walked away. Did the airbags have anything to do with it? I can't say.
I do know that airbags total a car. Had it not been for them deploying the 98 Taurus was fixable, very little damage.
I dig ABS and airbags. Plus, aren't these required by law nowadays?
I got weirded out by cruise control, but I know how to work it after a bit of time. It doesn't always work, but is nice to maintain constant speed. OTOH, I scarcely use it.
I tried the backup cams on rental cars, and they're handy, even if not "strictly needed"
I have never tried the automatic stopping, automatic "swerve back into your own lane", nor radar that beeps if you're too close to an object. For the former 2, I'd be "weirded out" again. At least I have the option to turn those off. For the latter, I think I could get used to that (although I'd like the option to disable this).
