What are your thoughts between a Nissan Rogue & VW Tiguan? Possibility considering one or others in the fall or late summer when my current lease is up.
Volkswagens are terribly unreliable, especially the Beetle. Nissans are reliable.
I owned many Volkswagens and loved them all until I bought a brand new 1978 VW "Champagne Edition" Rabbit. It was more unreliable than American cars! What a POS. It seems like they have not gotten any better in the past 38 years, but have gotten worse.
Since 1985 I have owned two Nissans. The first one was a 1985 Sentra I bought new. In the eight years I owned it I had to put a muffler and water pump on it. I traded the Sentra in for a new 1993 Nissan Hardbody Pickup. I still have that truck! It has given me 24 yeas of excellent service. Besides tires and batteries, the only things replaced have been a starter, water pump, radiator, windshield washer motor and the little rubber bumper that is mounted on the brake pedal that works the brake lights. I have never even had to add freon to the much used air conditioner. It still will freeze you out!
That being said, if I were you I would be looking at Toyotas. They are more reliable than Nissans. I have a 2005 Corolla that has had ZERO problems in twelve years. I have only put two sets of tires and two batteries.
What do 80s and 90s vehicles have to do with today? The reliability picture has changed significantly since then.
My 2008 Altima took me through my early fatherhood slash college years... 300k+ miles. I now own a 2014 Altima that I've run to 80k already. No issues.
I just sold my 2013 VW Passat TDI back to VW and I bought a 2017 Subaru Outback.
I wouldn't buy a Nissan and I wouldn't buy another VW, but if I had to choose between the two I'd probably go with a Nissan.
My Passat had the clockspring go out twice while I owned the car. The first clockspring failed at 24,000 miles and was under warranty. The second clockspring failure occurred 20,000 miles later just outside of warranty. Luckily for me, VW ended up reimbursing me for the second failure. I was told by the service rep that I turn the steering wheel too much when I drive and that caused the repeated clockspring failures. I also had a diesel related (ad blue heater) part go out just outside of warranty, but luckily for me again, VW ended up reimbursing me. The big VW services are so expensive and the repairs are incredibly expensive.
