Does Carmax decline to take a car or they will always offer you sth? I want to make sure that I can dump the car if I drive 15min to the carmax and spend my time there. If no guarantee, I guess it will go to some charity for less trouble.
It's a ~15 yr old car with almost 190k miles on it, transmission just could not go up the 4th gear, but still drivable locally. Some other minor problems but overall it was still a moving car.
Tried to sell it on CL while listing all the problems (want to be honest and sell it to someone who can deal with the fix), but only getting some inquiries and offers like $100 from some guy who said he can tow it as well. Now I'm leaning towards selling it to some junk yard maybe for parts and metal? ( I replaced quite a few parts about 2-3 years ago, so a lot of the parts are still in good shape) or maybe donate it.
Do you guys have any recommendation for this (junk yard close to Baltimore area or charity)? My neighbors donated to Purple Heart and Salvation Army and said good things about them.
Thanks a lot.
Either drive it until it will drive no more or look up the book value of the car and if the transmission repair is cheaper than the book value, fix it and keep driving it or fix it and sell it back while its running. I know you are just getting your money back in return, but a running car is much easier to sell than a non running one. But im not sure if a 15yr old car with 190K is worth $2-3K
Gotta be careful. I junked a car, and the sleazebag junkers never bothered to transfer the title.
I think they gave me 50 bucks. If they sell one thing off it, they profit. They make so much off your car, it can be lucrative, depending on what it is. There is always the oddball parts request "I need a hood for a Merkur XR4Ti, do you also have the engine and by trans" etc.
"Donating" a car is not what most people think it is. A middleman broker hauls the car off, auctions it to a salvage yard and the worthy cause gets a modest percentage of the proceeds. Far better to sell the car directly to a salvage yard and then donate some or all of the proceeds.

If its a taurus sho, I would hold on to it a little longer. Have you tried draining the tranny fluid and replacing with factory fluid? If you do this, you just might get 4th gear back. I know you car sounds like a beater, but you can get more for it without the tranny problem.
