Didn't the Maxima have motor mount/tranny issues?

This one is a last-of-line model year of the Mk4 Jetta.. (A4 generation Jetta, 99-06) and I thought they ironed all the stuff out in about 2003!

Find an good independent transmission shop (good luck) and have them diagnose the problem. Then decide to let it be, fix this transmission or replace the transmission with a rebuilt. Only the first choice is inexpensive until the thing stops driving the car on an expressway halfway to nowhere.

all of the above and then some. Saturn had a problem with "Reverse Slam" on their transmissions.

Best to have it professionally looked at and then go from there.

Lots of reports I've found of the 'delay' in engagement with VW transmissions. But not so much with the banging.

I tell you what it meant in my manual shift transmission Saturn. It meant something sheared off and flew through the tranny housing, leaving a lovely hole. Not a healthy thing for a Saturn.

I found this. Hope this helps:

https://forums.anandtech.com/threads...e-jolts.51819/

This is known as a "Reverse Slam" a.k.a rough engaement this could be due to a lot of things but the main reason is because the hydrolic plungers inside of the valve body of the automatic taransmission work on the principle of pressure. When you shift into reverse the solonoids that divert fluid into different passages force a piston to engage. Unfortuntalty some dirt or maybe a broken spring is not causing the transmission to engage properly. By this time the engine revs in response to thinking it's already engage and increases the hydrolic pressure forcing the piston to engage creating a thud like or slam sound. In some situations you may need to do a total overhaul of the transmission. But how have you taken care of the transmission have you don't regular fluid changes. You need to do a system flush where your system is totally flushed out. If you have the same problem it may reqire servce.

If your car has flex discs on the driveshaft, check those first, as they can be worn.

I am hoping low low fluid (due to a leak) because, beyond that, if new fluid doesn't help it...
