I don't know if this discussion has been had before or not, but the title says it all. Manual vs. Automatic Vehicles. Which do you prefer?

I prefer automatics. Yeah they cost more, yeah the maintenance costs more, yeah it may burn through fuel more quickly. I don't care. It's easier to drive. I won't wear-out my foot/leg by constantly pressing a clutch. I can drive with my mind on other things; driving doesn't have to be a struggle. Why should it be a challenge? I'm not that interested in sports cars or high-end cars either. I'm an average person and an average car is good enough for me.

side note: I've driven manual and automatic big rigs before, and I know that, with a fully-loaded trailer, automatic extremely slow at climbing mountain roads. This thread is mostly about cars, but you can talk about any vehicle you feel like.

Didn't have a choice when I bought in 2008. Even if I did, I would have still chosen the 6 spd manual.

I'll always choose a stick shift over an automatic transmission.

I prefer a stick shift myself. It gives me more control over the car. THe downside being that eating an ice cream cone while driving is really really difficult.

Op speaks of the ease of an automatic, manual being a challenge. I'm the opposite. I want my driving to be fun and an experience, manual makes it fun, automatics are just boring.
Of course there are the purely mechanical reasons for preferring a manual, control as has been mentioned. Also, for me, terrain. Hills and mountains, it is just makes more sense to have a manual.

I admit, I haven't ever driven a manual car. I've driven a 10-speed truck. But not a manual car. Maybe I'd like it. I still think I'd prefer automatic, though.

I learned how to drive on a 60's Ford Falcon with "3 on the knee" manual transmission and my first 4 cars were all sticks. My daily driver now is an automatic, but I also have a manual sports car. Driving a stick is so natural for me, I really don't have a preference.
