I purchased a used '10 Chevy Impala back in 2015. Since then the paint on my hood has dulled and a couple discolored spots have appeared. Its particularly bothersome because the spots appear to grow brighter over time which contrasts with the dark gray color of the paint. I did a google search and went to a couple shops for estimates.

The first shop gave me an estimate of $339.73 and the second gave me an estimate of $544.20. I could really use the saved money, but on the other hand I want a good paint job. I posted the Quote details below:

Maaco (Paint shop #1)

Refinish Labor -> qty 3 --> $46 Each -> Total $138

Paint Materials -> qty N/A --> N/A Each -> Total $48.30

Body Labor -> qty 2 --> $46 Each -> Total $92.00

Body Materials -> qty N/A --> N/A Each -> Total $32.20

Hazardous
Waste Removal-> qty N/A --> N/A Each -> Total $10.00

Subtotal -> $320.50

Sales Tax -> $19.23

Estimate Total -> $339.73

Mikes Auto Body & Paint (Paint Shop #2)

A/M Corrosion Protection -> qty 1 --> $10 Each -> Total $10.00

Hazardous Waste -> qty 1 --> $3 Each -> Total $3.00

Body Labor -> 3.3 hr--> $48 Each -> Total $158.40

Paint Labor -> 4.5 hr--> $48 Each -> Total $216.00

Paint Supplies -> 4.5 hr--> $28 Each -> Total $126.00

Subtotal -> $513.40

Sales Tax -> $30.80

Grand Total -> $544.20

Is this as simple as "you get what you pay for" or could I take advantage of the savings and still anticipate a decent paint job? I've never had a paint job done before, so I just want to make sure I get this right.

Thanks in advance

You get what you pay for. Maacco is going to do no prep, you're going to have over spray every where, and it will more then likely start to peel with in a year. A cheap paint job is only going to make things worse.

You do get what you pay for. I had a custom hood painted about 11 years ago (with lifetime warranty). Not the cheapest quote, definitely not the most expensive. It is peeling badly now, good only...As of about a year ago. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the cost to fix. This place though was in PA and I live in NC and I imagine they will have reasons why it wouldn't be covered...

I'd get another estimate from an independent shop and look at reviews from customers. Some of this really depends on what you're looking to get out of it. A lot of people can't spot the difference between 6/10 and 10/10 bodywork anyway.

True, may also depend on how long you intend to keep the car.

I had entire car paint restored by MAACO. $400 in 1999 money. We owned car for about 5 more years - not a problem.

Products and precision equals great paint job!

How someone cares for it afterwards (along with weather)...Have impact on longevity.

500$ seems standard...

This is way more feedback then I expected! I'll have to mull it over. I'll decide by Monday when I'm off.

Again, huge thanks for all the replies.
