Generally speaking, someone who makes a mistake and then makes it everyone else's problem.
Like this person in front of me who accidentally got in a turning lane. Rather than complete the turn and turn around up ahead they just sat in the middle of the intersection and prevented the whole line of cars properly in the lane from turning. Some people just don't get double turn lanes. Either doing this or merging between the lanes in the middle of the turn.
I agree. Why do people not realise when they see the turn arrows in their lane, they are committed to making that turn, unless they can somehow safely change lanes, without interfering with traffic.
On a separate less important note. I see some lane marking issues in that video, that may have contributed to that incident. Why is there not a solid white line on the right side of that lane? The dashed line makes it look like it could be a through lane.
To the person that repped me, there is a law in my area but it ONLY applies to texting. There is no hands-free requirement and it's easier to lie about texting because even if a camera catches you with the phone you can claim you were checking the time etc.
One bad accident I came upon maybe a minute after it happened last year was a guy in a 4 lane 45mph street that rear ended a whole chain of cars. He was almost certainly texting as it was broad daylight and he hit them without braking because his little civic was utterly demolished and he pushed a big SUV into a Caddy into a sedan.
They took him away in an ambulance, he looked fairly seriously injured.
I'd say it's a combination of hurrying, and distractedness.. And where did the notion come from that makes people think because they are in the left lane it's OK to go like hell??? Speed limits are the work of traffic engineers who know the speed limit is set to allow for optimum merging and exiting traffic flows.
Except that it has been proven time and again that speed limits are not set for optimum traffic flows. Since traffic generally flows faster than the speed limit. They are set to generate revenue.
If you want to see all the worst driving habits at the same time, go to any big city airport. You have cabbies that don't stay in their lane and cut across you to get to the terminal entrance at the last minute, ridiculously slow people who drive like it's their first time on the road, and homicidal lunatics who go 60 mph in the departure zone. Turn signals? Ha! Forget it.
When I started reading, I thought you were gong to say Boston. Probably have to exclude Boston altogether since there the only unforgivable driving action is doing something safe or polite. Lanes, signs, lights, speed limits, stop signs, one way signs, all of those things are just for the birds to look at and perch on. In Boston they don't mean anything to drivers. The only way you know someone is texting is they hand is busy so they are not waving their middle finger at you.
Running a red light on a left turn after 2-3 cars have already done so ahead of you.
I actually think this is wise.. many communities have really short left turn greens and traffic flow would be a low smoother if they left greens longer.. I have nothing against these green hoggers. Maybe cities will come up with more intelligent signal timing in the future.
Mine is people who text... and slow people who go the speed limit or under. Other then that I try to relax and realize humans are neurotic including myself. They can't help it.
What do you think is the worst driving habit you commonly see?
For me it is tailgating. I see tailgating as a personal threat. It is like the other driver is pointing a gun at me. If anything makes me incredibly mad, that is it. If I ever lose it in road rage and get out and rip someone’s mirror off and hand it to them (my brother did this once), it will be a tailgater. That is the most annoying and probably one of the most dangerous. It is also the thing I see most often.
Texting is more dangerous but that is not driving, so I do not consider it a driving habit. They are failing to drive just like someone reading, putting on makeup or folding their laundry. Plus I really do not see it that much anymore. Nowhere near as much as tailgating. People seem to have woken up to the dangers of texting.
Drunk driving is also extremely dangerous, however I see noticeably drunk people only rarely now. Part of that is because I do not drive late at night that much anymore. Usually I assume the swerving, going slow, failing to signal or stop person is texting. If I see they are not texting then I assume they are either drunk or having a stroke. But it is not that common.
Changing without signaling is also very common. In fact, it may be more common than not. However while it is dangerous/rude/annoying, I do not find it as big a problem as tailgating.
Then there are people who just do not understand what signals mean. This weekend, a lady turned left on a yellow arrow right in front of oncoming traffic. Then she started yelling at the poor older lady who hit her. She thought a yellow arrow meant “hurry up, the light is about to turn red”
What driving habit do you think is most prevalent/dangerous or most aggravating?
In some jurisdictions it is not illegal, but the most common problem I see is people turning corners into the wrong lane.
Driving slowly in the left lane. MOVE OVER!! If you do this, then you absolutely deserve to be tailgated.
Texting / staring at your phone while driving.
Not using turn signals.
THis is like saying if you walk slowly down the grocery store aisle, you deserve to have a loaded gun pointed at you while the gunman is sneezing.
