If buying used, try Kia/Hyundai products, get a certified pre-owned, from the Kia/Hyundai dealer so the warranty would transfer. Around here you can get a used Elantra with around 20K miles for 11-12K if you negotiate well.

You can buy a new Kia or Hyundai for $15k. That way you get the full 5/60 basic warranty and the 10/100,000 powertrain warranty.
There are several better options! One is sitting right next to the Spark- the Chevy Sonic! The Spark is noisy, uncomfortable, painfully slow (and those are the nicest things I can say about it). The Sonic is a far better vehicle for only a few thousand more dollars.
I found 10+ NEW Sonic LS and LT sedans (with automatic transmission) for under $14,200 in my area.
Consumer Reports rates the Spark a very low 50 (out of 100) while the Sonic does much better at 64 (3rd best subcompact car).
Three even better choices rated higher, but to find one you might have to stretch your budget to $15,500. They are-
1- Toyota Yaris iA (scored 67, best subcompact car)- it's actually the Mazda2 with a Toyota badge
2- Kia Forte LX (scored 73, 3rd bet compact car & it has a 100k mile powertrain warranty)
3- Honda Fit LX (scored 66, 2nd best subcompact)
One other possibility is the VW Jetta S 1.4T. They're selling for $5k off sticker, which brings the price down as low as $15,135.
unless i can get a mazda 3 for around 16k tops, i think ill be looking at the chevy sonic, toyota yaris and vw jetta 1.4t mentioned. girls always liked the jetta so i think i should concentrate on that.
Our 2014 brand new Hyundai Elantra was bought in March,2014- a base unit which still had A/c, cruise, power windows/locks, am/fm/seriusXM radio {serius is pay radio, but the AM/Fm is still free}, blue tooth, and more for $15k.
I am not sure what they go for now, but March is a good time when dealers want to get cars SOLD off the lot.
The other option we were looking at was a Nissan Sentra base model. The Elantra has more room I think than the Sentra.
Since, then, The Elantra has gone 48K without a hint of trouble and only 1 turn signal light replaced.
A Elantra is a great buy for any young College graduate.

U.S. News scored these:
VW Golf - 8.5
Chevy Sonic - 8.4
Toyota Yaris - 7.6
Go to autotrader.com put in 13000 on price, 2015 to 2017 on year. I would go with Corolla if you can find one that price.
Personally, I do not buy new. I would buy one with less than 30K miles if I was in your shoes.
