+1 on that.

German engineering is excellent *within its design parameters*.

Step outside those design parameters (i.e. past the warranty period) and you own a giant flaming turd.

Now don't get me wrong- that is GREAT engineering in the sense that the vehicle performs as designed (and no more). But German vehicles are NOT something you want to buy used.

My sister bought a new Jetta mid 2000s. It was a good car until around 100K then they had to put over $5000 into it the next year.

The other side of the Jetta coin. I worked with a woman who had the same car, she had put nearly 400K on her Jetta when I left that job in 2015.

Have to agree with this comment and others about the Volkswagen.

One story. One Example.

Young lady - daughter of old friend - absolutely positively HAD to have a Jetta. No other brand would do.
I have no idea what is "in" with these young people. Do they think that this made in Mexico car is some sort of mini Mercedes? I have no idea.

I advised her of all of the good cars mentioned above and to avoid this Volkswagen.

Anyway, the young lady went to new car dealership and purchased a new Jetta.

As time went by. It was problem after problem. During warranty and specially after warranty. No Volkswagen in family garage/driveway now.

Just one example.

Now to those 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. A marketing joke. And so many fall for this.
READ the warranty and see what is covered and what is not covered.

The most boring car is one that leaves you stranded on the highway. The Corolla is very reliable, and I don't find it boring at all. I have had Honda cars in the past, and my 1987 Civic Si was not any more fun to drive than my 2012 Corolla, except for the transmission (I like manual, and the Civic had one). If you want fun cars, then you have to look into another other price range.

This Ferrari would be fun to drive, but you need a full time mechanic around you

Back when Kia used timing belts, I had one fail prematurely at 6 yrs/55k miles, resulting in the engine being destroyed. Kia installed a new engine at absolutely no cost to me. That's my 10/100,000 warranty experience. No American manufacturer would do that on a car that old, unless the owner had an extended warranty.

Any older nissan with low miles.
Most of them if not all are chain driven and your can get a very decent low mileage car for 8k . Actually any older car with low miles.
Just saw a civic on cars.com as well,1999,43 k miles, looked brand new. Price was 4955.

Newer cars now days......QA and cost cuts.

I currently shopping for a used car via nationwide. So many.

Hyundai/Kia pretty clearly state that the 100k mile warranty is for the powertrain. The problem is that many people do not understand what a "powertrain" is, and they expect it to cover something like a brake caliper or an a/c compressor.

It has to have at least half of the warranty left.
